Today's dollar rate is...

I've got lots to write or maybe this is just the enthu of starting a blog. Anyway, this happened at home today and I must share it.

First thing that Appa does in the morning when the newspaper comes in is to check the US dollar rate. Sometimes mom joins him too, like today. He held one paper and mom another and both the papers happened to have different dollar rates. But dad is the ultimate authority, none can dispute what he says. So, when mom said “Dollar rate has come down”, he immediately said, “What are you talking? It’s gone up!”
And the conversation that followed was somewhat like this:
Amma: That’s what this paper says. I’m not inventing the rate. You know that!
Appa: You always read the wrong paper. The rate is going up. See the rate for today is Rs. 46.77. My paper always gives the correct news.
Amma: Ok, your paper may be right. But this paper that I’m reading (mind you, she didn’t say “my paper”) says the rate is Rs.43.85
Appa: You just don’t believe me don’t you? See for yourself
Amma: Maybe the newspapers have taken rates at different times of the day. That’s why the difference
Appa: I told you, this is the correct rate. You always read the wrong paper
Amma, now irritated: If I’m reading the wrong paper, then why do you subscribe to it? Why can’t we just have one paper in this house?
Appa, not to be outdone: There are other correct news items printed in that paper. It is not meant for reading dollar rates.
Amma, just cannot stop now: You always give me the wrong paper to read. You don’t want to me to read the correct news
Appa, now has to give up or face a fight: Ok, here you take this paper. You read the correct news, ok and don’t fight with me early in the morning
Amma, cannot take defeat: I don’t want your paper now. I will read it whenever I want to. I have to anyway go and make breakfast now.

And she walked away. I, who was a mute witness to this, wonder who won the argument, whether it was an argument at all, why are we even bothered about dollar rates when no one we know is in the USA now and definitely no one is getting paid in USD and how they have managed to stay like this together for almost four decades now…
