Cheap ads form Horlicks and Complan
I first noticed the Horlicks commercial a few weeks ago and was surprised how it was approved for airing and how come Complan hadn't reacted. Yesterday I noticed the Complan ad too. What's happening? How can both these brands/companies assume that consumers are fools and will get sold by their ads?
This particular Horlicks ad was banned earlier. How can anyone be fooled that by just putting some powder in your milk, one will become 'taller, sharper and stronger'? If that were the case, then we'd all have been fed with only Horlicks and would have become geniuses by now! And how is Complan reacting to it? Complan's ad says that Horlicks is 'cheap'. It also did a PR exercise. Read that here: http://www.indiaprwire.com/pressrelease/food/2008121516869.htm
Well, I find that both the brands are cheap as they are getting into tactics that just don't go down well. These ads leave a bitter taste and I don't think I will trust either of them anymore.
As an agency person, I think complan had to retaliate as Horlicks was directly targeting it. If Complan had kept quiet then it would be assumed that Horlicks's claims were true. But I wonder why Horlicks, which is supposed to be a market leader in the category had to resort to this gimmick? What pressure was the marketing team in...??

Also, I heard there was a print campaign as well and I understand the ads came in newspapers. Do you have any idea in which newspapers did they appear ?
I beleive there was a print campaign in a Malayalam daily. I haven't seen any in Bangalore so far but am not sure. About "dragging to court" business, I really don't care too much now as I have no respect for the two brands.
