The take out from 3 Idiots

Watched 3 Idiots over the weekend and can't stop laughing at the various scenes involving "Chatur Mahalingam" . It's hilarious and at the same time says a lot about the way we Indians are, the way our parents are about studies. I completely relate to the pressures a student faces from school to college and go back in time to the days when my parents wanted me to become a doctor not understanding that Maths and Science were my weak points. Whenever I tried to explain this to my parents, my dad and mom would say that I'm lazy and didn't put in my best. Sigh!

When I passed out from school, I wanted to take Arts as a subject but coming from a TamBrahm family it was considered demeaning. "What will so and so say when I tell them my daughter has taken Arts?"or "You will make sure that our standing in society will go down the drain with your attitude towards studies"...endless comments. Ultimately, I chose an in-between and did Commerce (even though I continued to struggle with Stats and Maths and Accounts!) I even dabbled with ICWA as I was scared that my parents will marry me off if I don't "do something in life". All the while, I ignored one thing that was important to me - music and dance. Without any guidance on what I should be doing in life, I gave up music and dance and tried to study. Haha!
Then came the shocker, I flunked ICWA inter part 2. (The shock was to my parents more than me, 'coz there is lots of Maths in ICWA!)

After spending a lot of agonizing nights and a year at earning some of my own money, I decided to do an MBA in marketing and the rest is as the cliche goes is 'history' :-)

Now, after watching the movie, I felt it's true for most students of my era. Studying something due to parental pressure and not out of joy! It's making me think seriously about pursuing my music hobby and taking it to a meaningful end.

What I think will be the fall out of this movie is that many 'disturbed souls' (like me) will consider an alternate career or a serious pastime instead of "running after success".
