Dev D is bold!

Went to watch Dev D yesterday. Hubby dear was really looking forward to it and we bunked office and went to watch the morning show. We missed the first few minutes of the movie (got caught in traffic) and entered the theatre when Dev was trying to sort of 'make out' with his Paro..

Anyway, the dialogues, the treatment of characters, the actors' comfort with their clothes, manners, etc. were quite with the times. The hero, Abhay Deol, was damn good! Drugs, booze, foul language were quite liberally shown and I didnt see any of my neighbours flinch. Infact they were hooting and shouting everytime there was a corny dialogue. One cannot (and must not) of course compare this version with the Dilip Kumar or Shah Rukh Khan ones. The ending is also more positive - something that the book and the previous two versions could have adopted... that's cause I disliked the sad ending of the previous versions. The young ladies were quite bindaas I thought...not flinching one bit while making the first move. Overall an engaging movie and I loved the 'emosional atyachaar' song.

My mom would have been appalled had she seen the movie. I only saw one old couple in the theatre and I could see that they were very uncomfortable and were glad to be out of the theatre at the end. Another observation was that there were mostly guys in the auditorium. Very few women. And even they were accompanied by a guy. Some things probably haven't changed when it comes to an "A" movie...

Booze and drugs were common when I was in college but not out in the open and as I was never part of the gang that was into this, I cannot comment on the state of things. But if its more rampant now than it was then, I think its a very sad state of affairs. Some of the upper class kids definitely are out of control... In the movie, I wished Dev's dad was more helpful in solving the problem rather than being indulgent...but that's the way it is! A problem child happens because of parents...Sigh.

Overall, a movie that must be watched.
